RYDER CUP HISTORY
-
The matches date back to 1926 when Samuel Ryder witnessed and unofficial match at Wentworth between golfers of the British and American PGA's. The match was won by Great Britain 13 points to 1 and this prompted Mr Ryder to say "we must do this more often". He then donated the now famous gold trophy.
-
The first Ryder Cup match was played at Worcester, Massachussets in 1927 and has since been a biennial event, played on a home then away basis.
-
In the early years of the cup matches, victory went to the home side until 1935 when the American's started to dominate the series.
-
By the late 1970's such was America's domination that the GB and Ireland team was expanded to incorporate the whole European continent. From 1983 all matches have been extremely tight and competititve and if anything, Europe now seems to shade the matches, winning 6 and halving 1 of the last 10 matches.
-
It is now one of the most popular sporting events on the world stage.
-
The next 3 Ryder Cup's are destined for the K club, Ireland in 2006, Valhalla, USA in 2008 and Celtic Manor, Wales in 2010.
